Got a hole in your mitt?
Crochet a little cap to keep your finger tips warm!
Instructions:
Round 1: Create a magic ring (mr) and sc 6 in mr, pull tight on starting string to close circle, sl st in first sc (6 stitches total)
Round 2: Ch 1, *sc 2 in first st , sc in next st*, repeat from * 3 times, sl st in first sc (9 stitches total)
Round 3: Ch 1, sc 1 st in each st around (9 stitches total), sl st in first st
Repeat Round 3 until desired length, cut yarn leaving a long tail to then sew cap on finger mitten tip, knot crochet end
Depending on yarn, the cap may turn out to different sizes. Use bulkier sized yarn (such as size 4 or Aran weight) to create a larger cap. Play around with amount of stitches as well if trying to achieve a larger cap size for bigger hands, or the opposite for smaller hands.
On to repairing those pesky mittens!
For reference, techniques for this project were learned from the book below:
Mending with Love: Creative Repairs for Your Favorite Things
By Noriko Misumi
I highly recommend this book, borrow or buy, it is full of useful repairing tips for fabric things.
This is my first repair project that has called for a darning tool. This tool provides a solid foundation to make sewing repairs. Purchasing the actual tool is an option or finding objects around the house that can aid you!
As you can see, the skull shaker toy offered a round surface for sock or large mitten repairs (in the book above, a round door knob made for an excellent surface). I found the plunger of an apple coring tool the perfect size for sewing caps on finger mittens.
The darning tool will now be inserted into the finger that needs repair. With the long yarn tail, thread your large needle and sew the cap to overlap the finger mitten fabric. Sew around 1 or two times, weave in yarn end to the cap, cut end.
Get experimental (and fun!) with your repairs:
Try out embroidery, play with different crochet shaping using single crochet stitches, create beloved characters or make up your own
(like Pinky the Flippin' Bird!)
Bonus Repair: Using the skull toy for a darning tool to stitch up holes in my fav warm socks, I made magic rings with 12 double crochet stitches inside, pulled tight, then weaved in ends. I decided to do some colourful repairs so I used to different colour yarn to stich onto the sock, weaving in end when finished to the crocheted circle. This also works with larger mitten repairs, see below!
These socks used single crochet stitches and went bigger than 9 around total by increasing *2 sc in first st, 2 sc in next 2 st* repeat around.
Happy Mending!
